What is Help Me Grow?

“The goal of Help Me Grow Florida is to promote healthy development for every child in our state. Help Me Grow (HMG) is a unique, comprehensive, and integrated statewide system designed to address the need for early identification of developmental and/or behavioral concerns, and then to link children and their families to community-based developmental and behavioral services and supports.

Help Me Grow is an effective system because its efforts revolve around uniting a community to address the need for early detection through surveillance and screenings of children and building connections to community-based services and supports to address their needs.

Early detection and intervention are critical for optimal outcomes for children, but too often children miss this opportunity. Help Me Grow addresses this by building collaboration among community programs, providing a centralized access point for information and referral, promoting surveillance and screenings, as well as educating and informing the community.

How Help Me Grow Works:

Help Me Grow supports families, child health care, early care and education, and human service providers. The community can use Help Me Grow to identify early signs of developmental or behavioral concerns and the available community resources to address their needs. Without Help Me Grow, this sensitive period of opportunity may be missed due to untimely assessments or difficulty in finding and navigating appropriate resources.” Help Me Grow is a system that builds collaboration across sectors, including child healthcare, early care and education and family support. Through comprehensive physician and community outreach centralized information and referral centers, families are linked with needed programs and services. Ongoing data collection and analysis helps identify gaps and barriers in the system.

Help Me Grow Success Stories

  • ” I hope you know what an angel you have”: In March 2016, a mother in the Help Me Grow program, called asking for a supervisor , as she wanted to thank us for all that we do. She emotionally stated with a shaky voice, “I have 4 kids. Three are undergoing testing after calling the Help Me Grow program. The Care Coordinator I’ve been working with has been the biggest blessing since I moved back to Florida. She’s always trying to help. Even her tone of voice has been soothing to me during this difficult time. I wanted to let you know how special she is. She’s shown support by calling me and providing warm transfers to agencies that may be able to help. I hope you know what an angel you have working for you.”
  • “I could have never gotten these services without Help Me Grow”: A mother originally called 211 looking for speech therapists for her 2 year old son (almost 3). She was referred to a Help Me Grow Care Coordinator, who provided the Ages & Stages Questionnaire (ASQ) to this mother. The screening revealed a concern in the area of speech and fine motor skills, and was referred to FDLRS-Childfind for a full evaluation. While waiting for that appointment, the Care Coordinator gave this mother activities she could do with her son at home to promote fine motor skill development like playing with playdough, shaving cream and oatmeal. She reported that her son enjoyed this developmental play and she was seeing improvement. The evaluation at FDLRS-Childfind did, in fact, reveal a delay in speech and that he had difficultly focusing on one thing at a time. She explained that they mentioned he could have ADHD, but was too young to diagnose. Her son was eligible for placement in a specialized pre-school, where he would be in a class with other kids with speech delays and behavior problems. She told how they thought he would have a good chance of catching up to his age group by the time he entered kindergarten due to this early intervention. This mother thanked the Care Coordinator over and over again, saying that she could have never gotten these services without Help Me Grow. She wasn’t even aware of this possibility before calling 211.
  • “I’m so Grateful to Help Me Grow”: A mother initially called 211 feeling hopeless and desperate, as her 3 year old son’s pre-school was kicking him out due to behavior. She was connected to a Help Me Grow Care Coordinator, who was able to refer her to Chrysalis for counseling to work on his behavior. This mother completed the Ages & Stages Questionnaires (ASQ’s), where the score was high on the ASQ-SE, so this mother was referred to FDLRS-Childfind, and got a surprisingly soon appointment for the following week, due to an advocacy call made by the Care Coordinator, as this was an emergency situation for this mother. Typical referrals are scheduled more than 2 months out. This mother reported that FDLRS-Childfind informed her that her son had 20% Developmental Delay, and was able to place him in a pre-school with a low child/teacher ratio. She explained how this has been such a relief for her, and that he is like a different child now, after only a short time there. She reported that he rarely comes home on RED (for bad behavior) from school anymore. He is using words more instead of resorting to acting out. She even feels he may no longer need the therapy services, as his behavior has improved so much. She was so grateful to Help Me Grow for connecting her to these much needed services.
